Holborn and St Giles seem so full offices and shops that it’s nice to occasionally check out the dog friendly places in the area – especially as the weather gets a bit warmer and al fresco dining becomes an attraction proposition.
We took a stroll around a couple of the small garden squares. Just along from Holborn tube station and accessed from Procter Street is Red Lion Square Gardens. It isn’t a large space and it is a bit shady as a result of the tall buildings all around it but there are benches, grass and plants as well as a café in the centre with some tables and chairs. There’re lots of pigeons here too.
Walking along Theobalds Road, Vernon Place opens onto Bloomsbury Way where there is the larger and brighter Bloomsbury Garden Square. Yesterday, there were lots of people out enjoying their lunch hours in the sunshine. The toddler’s playground was bursting with happy kids too. It doesn’t take long to walk around this green space but the interesting architecture and the history make it worthwhile.
But hidden away off the square is one of my favourite London places - Pied Bull Yard. This is a delightfully quaint courtyard with lots of outside seating (including rattan sofas covered by large parasols for when the weather turns) for those with dogs where you can enjoy the drinks and food from The Davy’s Wine Bar Truckles or the Café de Cordon Bleu. There are some interesting shops to peer into as well – including the London Review Bookshop and Classic Cameras.
As we strolled back to Holborn tube station we walked along Sicilian Avenue where there were lots more outside dining options for restaurants including Spaghetti House, Patisserie Valerie and Orchard Kitchen for coffee.
