Should we ban Donald Trump from the UK?

We Are London

Who would have thought a few years back that a crazy-haired, comedy figure would be a strong candidate for becoming leader of the most powerful country in the world?

Obvious comparisons to Boris Johnson aside, where he differs from Mr Johnson is that he keeps making headlines for his misogynistic, racist and downright bigoted comments. First he called Mexicans “unwanted”, and in the last few days he's advocated a “complete and total shutdown” of Muslims entering the US. Not forgetting choice quotes like “I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her” and “we have places in London and other places that are so radicalised that the police are afraid for their own lives”. We could go on and on, and on.

In the words of rival Democrat candidate Bernie Sanders, speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live: “what somebody like Trump is trying to do is he’s trying to divide us up. A few months ago we were supposed to hate Mexicans, and he thinks they’re all criminals and rapists, and now we’re supposed to hate Muslims, and that kind of crap is not going to work in the United States of America”.

He currently owns a hotel and golf course in Scotland, and Scottish MP Patrick Harvie has called for a boycott of his businesses due to his “fascist” opinions. There’s now a campaign to stop him entering the UK on the grounds of hate speech, which doesn’t look too good for a US presidential candidate. At the time of writing the petition had received over half a million signatures, when only 100,000 are needed for it to be debated in Parliament. What will happen next?

Are you signing the petition? Or would banning him from the UK be against freedom of speech? Leave us a comment on our forum – should we ban Donald Trump from the UK?
