TASTE ON TRIAL: HERITAGE DULWICH

Love London

There’s a new kid on the block when it comes to dining in Dulwich with the arrival of Heritage. Putting a contemporary spin on traditional Indian cuisine, it is certainly stirring up the takeaway scene with its fine dining ahead of its doors and welcoming customers for the first time in May.

Chef Patron Dayashankar Sharma has brought 30 years of experience - much of it in Michelin-starred kitchens Tamarind and Zaika - to design a menu encompassing both nostalgic authentic dishes passed down through the generations and unusual foods from lesser-known Indian regions and communities, all executed using the finest seasonal produce to ensure a refined and modern fine dining experience in the heart of Dulwich. The takeaway service launched successfully in February and given how utterly delicious the food was when we tried it a few weeks ago, I’m sure locals (myself included…) can’t wait to sit in and experience the real deal.

The dedicated at home menus currently available until the restaurant opens properly include a selection of sharing boxes for two, with a choice of meat, vegetarian, vegan and seafood options, as well as a choice of a la carte dishes. This is fine dining delivered, so while some of the dishes may seem familiar they will most certainly be a lot tastier than many takeaways you’ve tried…

We had the pleasure of sampling the classic Heritage Rajputana (£42 for two) featuring signature dishes due to appear on the restaurant menu including a crisp and delicious Mysore Bonda, a creamy and flavour-packed Murgh Makhani chicken, Kasmiri Lamb which packed a great punch of heat, utterly moreish Masala Aloo and a spicy Dal Makhani. Food arrive perfectly packaged and portioned with heating instructions, finished with Pilau Rice, a Cheese Naan and Paratha with Onion Salad and Raita.

What a feast. Every morsel was definitely an elevated take on any Indian takeaway I’ve had before, even given its travels (though it was only a couple of miles). Hand delivered by the chef himself it was certainly a welcome introduction to what I feel might become a new favourite restaurant and given the plentiful portions I was more than pleased to enjoy round two of leftovers for lunch the next day. One can only imagine that the in-restaurant experience will trump even the takeaway; I will certainly be booking a table as soon as it opens.

The dedicated menu is available to order via the website Tuesday-Sunday, with delivery available within a 2.5 mile radius of the restaurant in East Dulwich
