One hangover of the last 18 months that we're glad has stuck around is the number of brilliant recipe boxes now available, both meal kits from restaurants and innovative new brands popping up to make the most of the fact that more people have cottoned on to the home meal kit malarkey. Well, the latest of those that landed on our doorstep was from Grubby and boy, did it deliver.
With an ethos of 'more plants, less plastic', Grubby focuses on sustainable produce, minimal packaging, and bike deliveries wherever possible. The UK's first 100% plant-based recipe box, they are on a mission to make plant-based cooking more accessible and convenients without costing the earth.
Championing British produce and suppliers, they deliver nationwide (except Northern Ireland and islands) will all of their London boxes delivered by bike courier. From £26 (£6.50 per meal) for two recipes, for every box sold, they also donate a meal to a child living in poverty through 1morechild.org as well as delivering over 1,000 meals to London NHS hospitals in 2020, so this is a brand that's doing it's bit to give back.
There are over 50 recipes to choose from, each delivered with fresh, pre-measured ingredients needed to cook everything from scrach with, on average, a variety of six or more fresh veggies per box. There's also an accompanying recipe card for each, along with a QR code linking to a curated Spotify playlist to get you in the mood.
We recently tried two recipes, Miso Aubergine with Sticky Coconut Rice and Spiced Mexican Black Bean Burgers with Fries and Avocado. Setting the challenge of a weekday cooked WFH lunch, the clock was set...
Instructions couldn't be simpler and while we honestly weren't sure whether we'd get it all prepped, cooked and eaten in the allotted time frame, we were seriously impressed when in fact, it was all a lot quicker and easier than anticipated. Everything arrives perfectly measured out, even sachets of vinegars and other accountrements, meaning it really was easy as pie. The portions were big - the recipe for two provided a hefty lunchtime meal - and with both avocado, roasted peppers and carrot slaw on our plates it easily ticked towards our five a day.
The miso aubergine cooked for dinner the next night was a similar success story. Utterly delicious in terms of flavour, super simple and a really tasy addition of a mega easy sticky coconut rice which we've made again multiple times since. All in all, a winner.
While recipe boxes may not be an affordable option for every meal, for kickstarting new habits, providing new recipe inspiration or a time-saving solution to healthy eating when busy, Grubby is our new go-to.
From £26 (£6.50 per meal) for two recipes.
