KÖD: THE SCANDI STEAKHOUSE COMES TO SOHO

Love London

Following its first successful opening in the city, Danish steak house KöD opened its second outpost, tucked away in Soho's St Anne's Court. This impressive space is not to be missed - with a chic marble bar with upholstered seats along one wall, the space features sophisticated dark wood, lamp lit tables, muted tiled floors and deep green foliage throughout. It's terribly elegant and the food certainly matches.

The name KöD means meat in Danish and is pronounced similarly to 'cool'. KöD Soho is the eighth opening under this brand name for DiningSix which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.  There are currently three successful sites in Denmark - two in Copenhagen and one in Aarhus as well as three Norway premises in Frogner and Posthallen, Oslo and another in Stavanger.

Behind the brand is London based founding partner Morten P. Ortwed who, along with five friends, launched KöD in Denmark in 2014 before expanding into Norway and moving to the UK to oversee the UK developments and launch KöD City in March 2023.  Running the kitchen operations for all UK KöD restaurants is James Durrant who previously worked for Gordon Ramsay Holdings and The Stafford Hotel.

The menu has plenty on offer. Their KöD tartare is spectacular, from prime British beef with mustard, horseradish, shallots, capers, chives & tarragon and served with smoked chive cream, pommes allumettes & rice crackers. A langoustine tortellini is a real standout, with delicate langoustine, lemon zest, parsely, herb oil & rich langoustine broth, it's super sumptuous and a shame there's not a main course of it to be honest. The steaks are of course the standout, ranging from a 280g Scottish striploin at £38 to the A4 grade Japanese wagyu striploing at £78. We tried a deliciously juicy fillet from Uruguay, minimu 35 day aged, with a fantastic bearnaise sauce, crispy truffle and tarragon fries and a charred hispi cabbage with smoked chive emulsion and fresh chives. The combination of all the herbs made for a real taste sensation. Don't forget to leave room for dessert - the fried apple pie, with vanilla ice cream and caramelized white chocolate is dangerously good, while the dark chocolate Gateau Marcel served with burnt white chocolate, cherry crumble, sweet cherry coulis, & vanilla ice cream is not to be missed if you're a chocoholic.

Some say London may not need yet more steak restaurants, but with such a superb offering and a fresh take on flavours, the Danes are welcome here.
