UK Triumphs at Golden Globes

The All In London Blog

Slumdog Millionaire picked up more steam heading into the Oscar nominations with four wins at Sunday night's Golden Globe awards ceremony, including Best Picture in the Drama category. Danny Boyle took home a Globe as Best Director for the movie, which also chalked up wins for its screenplay and score. Mickey Rourke and Kate Winslet, each tipped as a serious contender in Oscar's acting races, got to practice their acceptance speeches — twice in Winslet's case, with Globes for her lead performance in Revolutionary Road and supporting (for award purposes, at least) turn in The Reader.

In another possible foreshadowing of Oscar time, the late Heath Ledger was honored for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. The winners on the Globes' Musical/Comedy side included Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Colin Farrell (In Bruges), and Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky). Notable Oscar contenders absent from the Globes winners' circle: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon.

On the TV side, Mad Men, 30 Rock, and John Adams took series honors, and the stars of the latter two took most of the performance awards. However, Mad Men's Jon Hamm and January Jones lost out in the acting categories to Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) and Anna Paquin (True Blood), respectively.
