Founded in 1977, the Garden Museum (formerly the Museum of Garden History) is located in the former St Mary-at-Lambeth parish Church next to Lambeth Palace by the River Thames. Following the completion of an 18 month, £7.5million re-development project made possible by the National Lotterym the Museum has reopened its doors in May 2017. The Garden Museum is Britain’s only museum dedicated to the art, history and design of gardens. It is a celebration of gardens and gardening, and a quiet place for reflection in the hustle and bustle of London.

From specialist country estates equipment to improvised tools that people use in their own back gardens, from Victorian and Edwardian objects to gardening since 1950 – the museum’s collections contain over 9000 objects representing British gardens and gardening through the ages. The museum is well-known for its collections and exhibitions, various events, symposia and its garden in the style of a 17th Century knot garden.

There is lots on offer in terms of contemporary gardening too; the museum’s potting shed offers visitors practical gardening advice. All year round, there are garden-related events, talks, plant fairs and activities for the whole family.

The museum space can be hired for a range of events, such as wedding receptions or corporate functions after the museum has closed.

Open daily 10.30-17.00 (Saturday 10.30-16.00)
