Kelmscott House in West London was the home of William Morris from 1878 until his death in 1896. Morris was an artist, textile designer and writer, largely credited with creating the British Arts and Crafts movement. He named the house after the Oxfordshire village he lived in a few years before. Although the whole house is not open to the public, the former basement and coaching house are where the Kelmscott Museum is located, which serves as the headquarters for the William Morris society. The museum features examples of some of Morris’ designs along with works belonging to the Pre-Raphaelite genre that he was also associated with; elsewhere you will find embroidery samples, stained glass and wallpaper samples. It’s also a popular stop for school visits due to their specially tailored art and history sessions. The Georgian building overlooks the River Thames and is just a few doors away from where Morris started his printing press.
