Kempton Park is the racecourse that is closest to London. It is set in 84 hectares of land, in Sunbury-on-Thames near Richmond, 16 miles from the city centre. In 1872, businessman S.H. Hyde leased the grounds and six years later, opened them as a racecourse. Famous for its horse racing events (there are afternoon, evening and weekend races) Kempton Park stages both Flat and Jump racing throughout the year. The premier race meeting of the year is the traditional Christmas Festival on December 26th and 27th with the most famous race being the King George VI Chase that is held every Boxing Day. During summer, evening racing on Wednesdays is a popular event. The site is also home to a weekly market on Thursdays, and an Antique market which takes palce on the second and last Tuesday of every month.
Kempton Park Racecourse has its own railway station, served by South West Trains on the Shepperton to Waterloo line.
