Wimbledon has evolved from the venue of the Lawn Tennis Championships in 1877 to the most coveted and respected prizes in the Tennis calendar.

The tournament now attracts more than 500,000 spectators per year. The annual Wimbledon tournament begins on the last Monday in June for two weeks, and attracts professionals from more than 60 nations. The tournament requires more than 6,000 members of working staff from umpires to ball boys and girls.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club hold the annual event and it was Croquet that originally drew the crowds during its formation in 1868.

Visitors to the courts may also be interested in visiting the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum. The museum's exhibits include a display on the changing of ladies fashions within the game, many pieces of equipment from the history of the game as well as the trophies and prizes from many of the games most famous clashes and events. Guided tours are offered outside of the tournament, with visitors able to walk on Centre Court and relive Andy Murray's famous victory in virtual reality!

Since Arthur Gore won the first Wimbledon men’s singles Tournament the event has been won by a string of overseas international players- In 1980 Sweden’s Bjorn Borg became the first player to win the event in 5 successive years in thrilling matches with such greats as John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. In July 2013 Andy Murray became the first British winner of the men's singles title since Fred Perry won it back in 1936!
