Between speakeasies, pop-up burger joints and craft beer emporiums we’re beginning to forget about the little guys, the ones with that late night, anything goes attitude. With that in mind it seems only right that we check back in with The Social on Little Portland Street and see if it still incorporates all that is ‘subterranean style’ in London nightlife.
Sat northeast of Oxford Street, The Social has been a staple of central London’s music scene for many a year. Space may be of a premium in the underground bar/club, but that has never stopped it bringing some of the best nights to the capital. Seats are pushed around the sides of the dance floor in cosy booths, the stage regularly shakes to live performances and there’s even a food and cocktail menu for those slow early week evenings.
For food, see burgers and BLTs – solid bar sustenance. Drinks are a little more varied with cocktails like the Apple Crumble (Apple Schnapps, Goldschlager, cinnamon liqueur and apple juice) alongside draught beers like Amstel and Sagres. However, The Social isn’t really about the food or the drink, it’s the entertainment pumped out from its eclectic range of nights.
Poetry slams meet Hip-Hop Karaoke and dancehall parties follow on from electro nights - and then there are the Sub Soul Saturdays. If the likes of Jazzie B of Soul 2 Soul spinning anything from soul, disco and hip-hop gets you moving then it has to be one of the most fool proof weekly events in London.
It has been going strong for over a decade and there is no doubt that it is on track to match that and then some…
