All In London Review
A tiny alternative to the large, loud, full of laughing people places
But So Bar offers an alternative option to the large, loud, full of laughing people places. It’s hidden away down a narrow car-free alley just off the main drag and if you weren’t looking for it, you could easily miss it.
Inside it is tiny. There’s a number of high stool tables at the front (with handy pegs underneath to hand your jacket or coat) and some lower, more conventional tables tucked away at the back.
There’s an extensive cocktail list but I usually have a glass of wine – sometimes a bottle. The Sauvignon Blanc is passable. And if you can’t drink alcohol they have some interesting choices. My companion sampled a fresh apple juice which had a slice of fresh ginger garnish – and the flavour permeated the chilled drink. It looked and tasted sophisticated.
And I was surprised to find that on Wednesday night they have live music. There was a three piece jazz band playing last night – a singer, a double bass and a drummer. And they were really, really good. It was a rather personal performance as there couldn’t have been more than 12 people in the place.
The staff are young, friendly and attentive – and although you can go to the bar, it is a table service. Setting up a tab is easy but they are equally happy for you to pay as you go. When I needed to check the local car park times they provided me with the password to their Wifi.
They have a food menu which consists of tasty little dishes with a tapas bias although there are some British favourites including pigs in blankets, mini beef Yorkshire puddings, devilled eggs and chicken skewers – with one plate costing £5 and 4 for £18. There are a reasonable number of vegetarian options too.
The décor is quite modern with a cool white theme but the low lighting makes it an intimate venue – ideal for a romantic liaison or a date. But equally fun as a starting (or ending) point for an evening out with your mates.
The bar upstairs is available for private hire – and with a capacity for about 50 people would be a great party venue.
