All In London Review

An excellent place to bring friends who are as yet unaware of its charisma...

Bourne and Hollingsworth is not your typical Fitzrovia establishment, however, with a sharp sense of style and a sultry kind of secrecy there should be many more like it.
Call it just a room, but the modest space you find at the foot of the staircase is as charming as they come. Decorated with hints of chintz, dashes of flora and the simplest furniture; it deceives he who takes it at a glance. Welcome to Fitzrovia’s hippest speakeasy bar.

Bourne and Hollingsworth will appeal to the adventurer in you, the little piece of you that yawns at the thought of yet another bar where all you’ve got to look forward to is wine after wine, beer after beer...

This may be ‘just a room’, but the character and the atmosphere of this ‘room’ transform it into something much deeper. Fun and lively yet seedy, it attracts local converts, couples and those that search beyond the mundane for the charm. The great thing about Bourne and Hollingsworth is the jagged edges that it carries with aplomb – as if it was once a pristine drinking den that fell on harder times. It’s an act of course, but who doesn’t love to pretend…

The drinks are served from a bar hatch in the wall – a hatch that opens up a view of the bricked up cellars behind it, which is intriguing in itself. Draught beers are of the top-notch premium brands and Asahi is particularly welcome. The main focus falls heavily on the cocktails and heavier liquor; after all, this is supposed to resemble a speakeasy. Gin based concoctions come in teacups and gimmicky as that may be it makes all the difference. Presentation is matched by preparation.

Bourne and Hollingsworth conjures a welcome nostalgia for its visitors with a loving pastiche of a bygone era. It is an excellent place to bring friends who are as yet unaware of its charisma.

Anybody who is anybody...

Fitzrovia sits well with the whole speakeasy revival for some reason. Perhaps it’s the plethora of basements that look so enticing in the way their hand railed steps lead downwards. Bourne and Hollingsworth is at the bottom of one of these flights of concrete and when you find it you’ll thank the stars. On first look it boasts style and refinement, but look a little closer and there’s an amazing worn in appeal to it all. Take a gin cocktail in a teacup and enjoy the spirit.

Bourne and Hollingsworth were serving gin out of teacups long before the trend for all things speakeasy took over London.

The basement bar is a surprise almost solely on its location. It breaks up all the faceless NIcholson/Sam Smith/Wetherspoon pubs and adds a little flair into Fitzrovia. And plays some danceable music on Friday and Saturday nights too!!
