With the standard of bars on the Thames leaving a lot to be desired, it was about time there was a shift in waterways as hip venues decided it was time to get in on the Regents Canal. Waterline wasn’t the first but the converted warehouse/unit in which it has taken up residence in is a well-designed space. Ideally placed just west of Kingsland Road, it has Towpath Café as a neighbour and a little way upstream you’ll also find Shrimpy’s.
Clean and functional, Waterline is part bar, part restaurant. High ceilings mean tall windows, which means sunlight and the constant feeling that you’re hovering over the edge of the canal – which you kind of are. A polished bar, a dim function room in the back (live music and film nights take over intermittently) a small restaurant area and a stylish mezzanine make the place well worth visiting.
When the sun is shining the Waterline will be heaving. However, when skies are grey and the rain is falling the bar swaps its bright and airy demeanour for an attractively atmospheric feel, almost equally appealing.
Beers on draught include Meantime lager and Pale Ale and there is an excellent wine list. Food is more up market than the usual bar offerings with the likes of rib-eye steak, goats cheese tarts and a delicious roast beef baguette on the menu. Waterline is an attractive, personal venue and rain or shine, there’s always something about being next to the water.
