All In London Review

The bar makes for an al fresco Thames nightspot that’s likely to be in high demand.

Review Image
The new branch from double Michelin star winning chef, Tom Aikens might not ever be likely to host the man himself in the kitchen, but even if he were to take a shift or two, it’s unlikely his presence would be the highlight. If location is key to a business, then Tom’s Kitchen and Deli has won. Joining forces with the Imperial War Museum, the venue is plumped right next to the largest exhibit in the museum’s expansive collection, the HMS Belfast itself. Standing two storey’s high, a narrow section of Thames River separates the informal deli and bar from one of the British Navy’s most famous vessels.

While this area around City Hall has an unmistakable corporate flavour to it all, the shiny slate of the South Bank is long forgotten when you’re on the top floor of Tom’s, chilled prosecco in hand, sun setting across the HMS Belfast in one direction, uninterrupted views of Tower bridge in the other.

With the ground floor deli serving the Tom’s Kitchen signature range of sandwiches, bakery, platters and fresh juices, we suspect the Aikens seal of approval elevates the food beyond the usual fare you’ll find at most of London’s museums and historic sites. Visitors to the HMS Belfast museum will be spoilt by the quality but we suspect that there will be plenty who forgo the ship and the deli for a place at the al fresco bar. Serving craft beers, wine, cocktails and nibbles, the bar will remain open till late, offering a Thames nightspot that’s likely to be in high demand.
