The Approach Tavern is a gastropub with a selection of real ales, Czech beers and fine food. It has a jukebox, a TV for sporting events, and a heated terrace. It is also an art gallery from Wednesday to Sunday.

All In London Review

Peaceful pub that’s beloved of locals and new arrivals

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped onto a suburban street as soon as you set foot on Approach Road; the pavements are wide and there are tall, leafy trees on either side, in fact the only thing that gives the game away are the rows of Victorian terraces that have been converted to flats, and the odd expensive-looking pram being pushed around. Then on the corner stands the imposing Approach Tavern, with its Parisian-style street lamp outside, but obviously we’re not in the French capital, we’re in a leafy part of Bethnal Green.

The first floor of this pub may have an art gallery showing contemporary art, but the ground floor is an unfussy pub that manages to exist halfway between old fashioned boozer and trendy haunt beloved of the upwardly mobile East End locals. Aside from the fact that it’s a stone’s throw away from Victoria Park, the best thing about The Approach is it’s peaceful atmosphere, with music playing at a low enough volume for you to have a good old natter with your friends. To the right hand side of the bar is an alcove which can be used for private dos or hiding from the other punters, although even on busier nights the noise levels don’t become intrusive. Smokers also have the benefit of a spacious covered terrace with heaters and plenty of foliage. The menu steers clear of fashionable pub fare and sticks to cheap and cheerful favourites like fish and chips and burgers, and there is a section of ales as well as the usual draft and bottled beer (the latter priced at £3.25 a bottle).
