All In London Review
The Cutty Sark Tavern is one of the best riverside pubs in London - no doubt.
If it is riverside views you want then they don’t come much better than this. The Cutty Sark Tavern in North Greenwich has the replica Tea Clipper on one side and the wide expanse of Thames on the other. And with Canary Wharf in one direction and the Royal Naval College in the other, the skyline isn’t too bad either. It seems strange to focus on the outside of a pub before the inside but the Cutty Sark Tavern is at its most popular when the weather is warm enough for people to make use of the impressive patio next to the river wall. For those that don’t come down this way too often, we’ll paint you a picture. This spot of Greenwich is all cobbled streets, willow trees, naval sculptures and picnic benches. With all that and more outside the pub, why go in for anything more than your drinks? Well, the reason to cross beneath the Tudor beams and head inside is the other three-quarters of the year when the cosy fireplaces, warm, worn wooden beams and low ceiling make for a sweet little bolt hole on weekend walks and long intimate evenings when it is cold and wet. Summer outside and winter inside, the Cutty Sark Tavern has the goods for both seasons.
Given the name and the location of the pub you might guess that it can get popular with the tourists. Food prices would suggest that’s the case with fish and chips, burgers and ‘posh chicken kiev’ and mash all priced at around £12 and upwards. The meals may be hearty but pub grub is what it is. Drinks on draught include the lager, pale and red ale from the nearby Meantime Brewery as well as a good range of real ale.
The Cutty Sark Tavern is a remote pub well worth travelling to. When you want outdoor drinking in a serene setting, this is the place. And when you want a quiet, cosy pint, well, this is the place too.
