The Lighthouse

Battersea is home to the great dog and cat home and offers fantastic walks along the river in Battersea Park. So it should be no surprise to find a really dog-friendly pub in its midst.

The Lighthouse is located on the busy Battersea Park Road and there are a couple of tables and chairs outside. It’s easy to miss. But I urge you to pop in – with your canine companion of course.

The floors are wooden and the walls are painted green. There’s a friendly, spacious feel about the place. My eyes were immediately drawn to a sleepy Jack Russell relaxing under a table where his family dined (they are child friendly too) while my companion spied a collection of board games stacked invitingly in a cupboard by the door. I noticed that a bowl of water had been thoughtfully placed near the dog.

The large wooden tables indicate that they are used to having groups of people here but we found a small table where we could enjoy our drinks (a large Coke and a large Diet Coke – we’re doing alcohol free January – cost £5.20). For a Tuesday evening it was relatively busy but the clientele was varied – obviously some locals, some families, a few couples, possibly after work colleagues and even a few solo drinkers and diners.

Adnams is the beer and there were numerous signs indicating that they take some pride with their beer selection. The tables were adorned with tea lights so it felt quite cosy and there were boards offering a variety of bar snacks (olives £3, crisps £1.25, Welsh rarebit £4.50, Charcuterie board £9) if you – or your dog – gets peckish.

There’s also lunch and evening menus with all sorts of favourites such as fish (hake) and chips (£13) and rib eye steak and chips (£22) as well as more interesting dishes such as red-legged partridge, elderberry sauce, game chips, savoy cabbage and bacon (£15) or pumpkin and pepper stew, buckwheat dumplings & sage (£12). They appear to take pride in locally sourced ingredients.

I could just about see the fairy lights that adorn the extensive outside decked area and garden at the back – but as it’s rare to find somewhere that welcomes dogs into the warm we didn’t venture out.
