The Tiger

Another Antic pub, The Tiger on Camberwell Green may keep up the chain’s tradition of taxidermy but this one doesn’t have the glory of a past as another grand building to fall back on, which helps. Look around the Antic chain and there’s a former Conservative members’ club, a post office, a job centre and a council hall among the varied venues that have been taken over. The Tiger feels refreshingly pub-like and having replaced a not so warm and welcoming pub on the crossroads of Camberwell, we’ve got no problems with its updated distressed makeover complete with sofas, filled bookcases and hanging frame clusters.

The fear is gone, which is to say that you can enter this pub safe in the knowledge that you’re going to be afforded a smile from the friendly staff – we were. The clientele is majority student and the late opening hours on weekends (open till 3am) creates a lively atmosphere that makes a good change from the relaxed weekday feel of the place.

Food deviates from the usual Antic stuff, serving a menu of burgers instead. Alongside the beef, chicken and bean patties, you can also get fried chicken and pulled pork fries. As usual, the range of beers is solid with local breweries represented along with some choices from further flung destinations.
