All In London Review

A stunning Grade II listed building that makes a pretty good pub too

Review Image
Hidden from sight a mere fifty metres from Essex Road, this homely Islington pub is a genuine find. Located a short walk from Canonbury Overground station, set opposite the canal, the beautiful 1860’s building is a sight in itself. Grade II listed, the tall, imposing structure is going to keep you lingering outside if you have even the slightest interest in London architecture. Inside, times have changed from when you might be able to call the Marquess Tavern a ‘boozer’. Sure, it’s a pub, but it’s a pub that has undergone significant refurbishment to transform it into a homely, cosy space with some eclectic design appeal. Note the stunning black glass lamp shades in the main dining area, dangling above colourful mismatched armchairs and shining a light on the deep hues of Farrow and Ball style walls.

Big on food, the Marquess Tavern is the yard stick for which modern gastro pubs should be measured. Table service is extended throughout and the staff are relentlessly attentive throughout our visit, despite the fact that only one member of our group eats. It takes some time to get used to being served drinks at the table but settled in the comfortable snug by the rear beer garden, we can handle not having to move a muscle.

The menu is adventurous and while we arrive having already eaten, the 28-day cured flat iron steak and seafood noodle soup are both tempting. Main meals are priced between £13 and £17. Once a Young’s pub, you’ll find a good selection of ales on tap. We stick to Meantime Pale Ale and Camden Hells from the keg. Along with the beer there is a short cocktail menu, a big selection of gins and a good-looking wine list.

There are plenty of reasons why it would be great to live in Islington, around Canonbury in particular, and we’ve just added the Marquess Tavern to the list of them.
