Set up in grand fashion by the Proud group, The City branch is apparently modeled on the 1920s glamour of the prohibition era clubs. More Bugsy Malone than backrooms and brown paper bags. Tables are decked in immaculate white tablecloths, plentiful red velvet and seductive lighting helps deliver the message of upmarket sleeze and there are enough private booths at the back to cater for high rollers with a penchant for burlesque. Dominated by stag-dos, hen parties, birthdays and corporate outings, the atmosphere is unsurprisingly boisterous. Whooping and wailing is encouraged and from the moment you are showed to your table by scantily clad women you know what to expect. But the show is largely tame and despite the talented burlesque, on this occasion all performers play second fiddle to the fire-breathing femme fatale who steals the show without so much as a swinging tassel in sight. You can also expect acrobats, displays of obscure talents and crooning aplenty.

Booking performers isn’t cheap and that trickles through to the audience, naturally. Drinks are very expensive and despite the price of a three-course meal being included with the ticket in advance, there is plenty more money to be spent on the night. However, Proud Cabaret makes a compelling case for choosing its charm, entertainment and dashing interior for a group trip because whether you’re on a stag do, hen night or office outing you’ll receive the kind of exceptional service that makes it all worthwhile.
