We’ve all been to venues where we’re confronted by the presence of irritating neighbours next to us but it’s how we deal with it that separates us from them. Generally we choose to either ignore or escape but sometimes a place is just too small and even worse, too sweet to do either. Fowlds has been that place for us – and though we had the irritating neighbours thing, the venue was too good to flee. The point we’re making is that Fowlds is one of the tiniest cafes around so expect cramped company should you find space to settle inside the former frontage of a still-operational upholsterer’s. Also, expect to love it.
Quaint much? Beautiful, kitsch and classic? Yes. The fact that the upholstery still chugs along in the workshop out back lends this tiny room on Addington Square a palpable sense of romance. Plus there’s great coffee, unapologetic amounts of avocado served and an evening menu that delivers cocktails, beer and wine.
So super, so sweet, it’s a surprise that this bucolic slice of London living is spliced between hectic Camberwell Green and Camberwell Road.
