Vine, 48 Gray's Inn Road, London - Cafes & Tea Rooms near Chancery Lane Tube Station

I met a work colleague for an informal supper here one evening. It was relatively quiet (but not completely dead), on the intimate/romantic end of the scale with warm, soft lighting (not quite was I was looking for on this occasion!) and we took a small table on the ground floor. Lots of space here – the tables are not on top of each other and there is lots of space for staff to move about so you are not jostled.

All sorts are available on the menu – and there is sure to be something to please everyone. Unpretentious food (my companion is a bit of an upmarket restaurant type but seemed relaxed with what was on offer and his particular choice), discrete but friendly waiting staff (a little on the “summon us if you want us” scale of things) and a reasonable rather than overwhelming wine list. Functional food in a pleasant environment. Around £30 a head plus wine would be my estimate at what you would need to budget – which is reasonable enough for edge of City.

I should imagine that during the week that it does a rather brisk trade in low key business lunches, but its location – practically without anything except offices nearby - makes it a difficult choice for an evening venue – unless, like me, you have business colleagues or lawyer friends to meet near their offices or en route to their train at Kings Cross.
