Everyone likes ice cream; it’s pretty much the law, but what about gelato? “Hmm? Gelato. Tell me more,” you say. So, it’s similar to the other frozen dessert that we won’t mention by name again but the sugar content is higher, the flavours are way crazier and La Gelatiera is the hottest place to get the cool stuff right now.
Having opened its doors to the public, bringing a homely slice of Italiano chic and a whole fridge full of colourful dessert, this small café is looking to take over in Covent Garden. The delightful little space is decorated with a mix of salvaged furniture, reclaimed wood and stripes to give it that true gelato parlour look. The floor even comes complete with its own spy hole down to the laboratory/kitchen below where you can watch the masters create their product. The sweet toothed will be lit up by the fruit sorbets like mango and pineapple, while the indulgent can make do with the richest of the rich- double chocolate. The more entertaining flavours include black sesame, peach Bellini, fig and sweet potato so there’s pretty much something for all manner of taste buds.
All gelato is made on site with seasonal ingredients, which means that flavours will change throughout the year. There is also excellent coffee to be had in the relaxed atmosphere. All baristas are trained at Leather Lane favourite, Prufrock so expect the best. Summer may be making a late showing but even when it eventually turns cold, La Gelatiera will remain a memorable destination.
