James Smith & Sons was established in 1830 when James Smith made all his umbrellas in a workshop at the back of his shop. Today the shop is still crammed with umbrellas of all shapes and sizes. A selection of other accessories such as walking sticks are also available.

The best shops in London to pick up an unusual gift

Be original and plump for an unusual gift

There’s nothing unusual about an umbrella, in this city or anywhere else. But they don’t immediately spring to mind when you’re thinking of buying a gift. And perhaps that’s because they’re just so damn easily misplaced. But what if you were given a beautiful, handmade umbrella, complete with touching monogram? Would you lose that? We think not. So visit James Smith and Sons (founded in 1830) the umbrella specialists on the corner of New Oxford Street.

Now, like most people, I am prone to leaving my umbrellas on trains, in cabs, in shops, in bars... pretty much anywhere and everywhere. So, perhaps I'd think twice about taking an umbrella from James Smith and Sons anywhere but some place I absolutely knew I couldn't lose it.

This shop is a thing of beauty. tradition, British design and heritage. Even if you're not in the market for a brolly, take a look. You won't be disappointed.
