What are the best and the worst tube lines on the London Underground?

The District Line has the most tube stations but I guess the point of your question was to find out which line has the most and least reliable service, in which case the Metropolitan Line must rank as one of the worst as the average commuter in 2006 wasted three days, 10 hours and 25 minutes due to delays (not including missed connections).

Check out this website there is a lot of interesting statistical information from which you may like to form your own criteria to determine which line is best and which is the worst.

I hate the Victoria line - it's always too hot, stuffy and really smelly :vomit:

Best: Jubilee Line
Worst: Northern line south London sections at rush hour

Most interesting: DLR - the novelty of driverless trains still hasn't worn off on me :)

best line has got to be the new one going to canary wharf, the jubilee line. when you get out the station is the bees knees. the small little old cramped ones in central london dont compare, although i suppose they have got their own kind of charm

Westminster station is also nice after it's revamp a few years back.. Leicester Sq must be amongst the worst - always rammed full, tatty walls and tiny, narrow platforms... although to be fair I haven't been to that station for a while - has it got any better?

For me...

Jubilee - Fastest
Central - I live in Notting Hill :)
Circle - Bakerloo - takes me to Paddington, Regents Park and London Zoo :D

I hate the Northern Line though - used to take it through to Bank, but it was soooo hot in the summer! Worse than Central Line by far!

A lot of people don't like the Northern Line, but it's my local one in North London and I don't mind it. I find it relatively quick, reliable and not too crowded (like all the lines it's packed at rush hour, but unlike the rest it's fairly quiet the rest of the time). It's also one of the only ones that works quite well during a tube strike, as it's considered a priority line so is kept fairly operational. The main downside is that it's one of the hotter lines in summer, but I've got used to that over time.

I don't much like the Central, Victoria or Bakerloo lines, as they seem to be grubbier and less comfortable than some of the others, they're almost always packed, and they're hot. The Jubilee is good, it's similar to the Northern in that it's clean-ish, comfortable and regular, but it's also hot and it tends to be out of operation a lot at the moment, especially at weekends.

Other than that I either don't really know, or they're much of a muchness. I've only been on the DLR once but it seemed nice, and it's ace sitting at the very front so you can see the tunnel ahead.

Note that sub-surface trains are larger and usually cooler than proper tube lines (check Wikipedia if you don't know the difference between the two types!).

The new Victoria line trains are clean (as one would expect) and comfortable. They had some teething problems when they were introduced but this line seems to be working quite well now because trains are so frequent

Further to my answer above, I moved recently and have had to start getting used to the Jubilee line. So far, I don't like it! I can't sleep because it's too bouncy, and it's always bloody closed at weekends, on bank holidays and for other general problems. The stations in the centre are good for my work, but otherwise they're a bit too far East if I want to go out in the West End, as I often do.

Funnily enough the Bakerloo, which I slagged off, is growing on me; It's still grubby and the trains are old, but at least it's reliable, and if I change onto it at Baker Street it gets me closer to the West End. That and the Metropolitan are what get me around when the Jubilee is messed up, which is often (or I can catch a bus to Golders Green and get the lovely smooth reliable Northern Line. That's sort of the luxury choice).

And yes, the above answerer is right, the Victoria Line is okay actually. I must have been thinking of some other grimy line.

When I used to live in London circa 1996-1997 my favourite lines were the Central (I lived near Marble Arch), the Bakerloo and the Victoria lines. The central was the most high tech back then and was so clean, Bakerloo was reliable and went to many places that I liked and Victoria was also new looking and clean although I rarely used it.

The mid grade lines to me were the Circle, Hammersmith and the City, Picadilly and District lines. They were not the cleanest but not the worst and generally went to places that I needed to go. The Picadilly line was Brilliant for me as I used to take it to Charing Cross Hospital (Baron's Court stop) in Hammersmith to do my research. It was also great because any time I wanted to take a holiday it took me right to heathrow for a faction of a cab fare (they were just building the Heathrow Express back then). The line was great but the rolling stock was old and tired.

The worst lines back then were the Jubilee and Northern Lines and. Both Lines had disgusting station stops and rolling stock (especially the Northern line). Mornington Crescent was always closed and seemed emblematic of the Northern Line. The Jubille line extension was coming soon to rescue this line but was not complete during this time.

I had no opinion of the Waterloo and the City line as I never had any need of it (I did ride it once just to say I did) I never got to ride the old east London line as I never had any need of it and the Metroplitan line was very Rarely used by me except in error when I didnt read the board and assumed it was a circle, district or Hammersmith and City line.

I have been to London several times since then and have seen huge changes to most of the lines I have mentioned but I just wanted to give you my impression of when I lived and loved London.
