I'm originally from Italy, and boy, you guys are lucky to have ads like those in your buses! Nothing like that will ever happen in Italy, which is nothing but an extension of the Vatican... Let me tell you, being an atheist there can be VERY annoying.

Religion is very much more intertwined with politics than it is here.
It is a bizarre situation. Officially we are a christian country, but although the Queen is officially head of the church of England, Tony Blair was famously advised "we don't do God" when he was Prime Minister, even though he is clearly a practising catholic who prayed with Barack Obama last week.
People still look at you with distrust if you announce you are an atheist in America. George Bush (senior) once said "I don't think that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots".
So in America you are as good as a terrorist that wants to bring down the government if you are an atheist!
