London's Restaurant Christmas Menus

We run you through tried and tested Christmas menus to bring you the best of the bunch...
London's Restaurant Christmas Menus picture

Over the last few weeks All in London has been road-testing London’s Christmas menus for your dining pleasure (it’s been hard work, honest). Unless otherwise mentioned we’ve ensured the restaurants listed below cater to a minimum of two people so you don’t need to turn up in a large group, but booking is always advised. We’ve also added a few favourites that are open on Christmas Day, should the turkey not defrost in time.

Budget
Have you promised someone a pre-holiday Christmas meal and forgotten all about it? Geronimo Inns might just save the day. Their menu starts from £23 for two courses or £28 for three, along with per-dinner nibbles and an optional palate-cleansing mandarin sorbet. Their pubs, which are all over London, from Mile End to Chelsea, are known for offering hearty British food and their festive offering is no different, with beer-braised steak in a suet crust and a very trad herb-roasted turkey with chestnut stuffing, dry cured bacon and chipolatas.

Splurge
Michelin-starred Apsleys at uber-lavish hotel The Lanesborough is offering a delectable (read: fancy) five course tasting menu for £65 per person minus wine, or £100 with wine pairing. Chef Heinz Beck managed to get the fastest Michelin star of any London restaurant with his fine Italian dining, and his foie gras with tangerine foam and scallops with tomato and carrot cream (enjoyed in a spectacular dining room) are worth splashing out on.

Exotic
Who said Christmas lunch had to be traditional? For something a little different, Thai restaurant Mango Tree is doing a three course set banquet menu for £39 per person (minimum four people) minus drinks, but you can add a glass of bubbly for another £7. Among the four sharing starters they offer an unusual dish of chopped smoked salmon in a fiery dressing, giant mussels baked in a spicy sauce and minced prawn parcels wrapped in rice paper and deep fried. The five mains include the simply titled “wrap”, a fillet of seasoned, buttery white fish wrapped inside a banana leaf, a slow-cooked turkey curry with a peanut sauce and very crispy pork belly cooked in oyster sauce. A separate menu for veggies is also available. Popular with girls on a night out and birthday parties, the epically proportioned dining room can be very noisy when full, which is most weekends.

Traditional
The menu at the Devonshire Arms in Chiswick is pure British, and utterly delicious. Salty, flavoursome ham hock with watercress and mussels cooked in stout are among the starters of their festive menu, and the mains include steak, turkey, fish and a very succulent dish of roast goose with all the trimmings, i.e. bread sauce, sautéed cabbage, sweet potato puree and gravy. Vegetarians are catered for, it’s £40 each (drinks not included) and food is served on platters for sharing, so it’s best for more than two people. Aside from the satisfying food, there’s a roaring fire to add to the Christmas mood.

On Christmas Day…
£££: There are numerous hotel restaurants where you can push the boat out. We recommend the six course Italian feast at Apsleys (if you’ve got £270 to spare per person not including drinks), and the more traditional four course meal at Roux at The Landau, which is £295 with wine matching and has a choice of seabass, roast rib of beef or turkey, and a bitter chocolate and praline yule log.

££: East London’s Boundary is offering fine French food for Christmas Day lunch, priced at £90 per person. Expect plenty of charcuterie and things like partridge, beef and tarte tatin.

£: Cheaper but equally deserving meals will be served at Bumpkin’s Notting Hill and South Kensington branches, where you will be able to gorge yourself on three courses of British classics like smoked potted goose livers and free range turkey with all the trimmings for £65, and at Kensington Place, where £55 gets you four courses with a choice of turkey or poached halibut with shrimps for the main course.
