All in One Ultimate Restaurant List Profile: Tayyabs

London’s Top 100 Restaurants 2013

Tayyabs opened in 1972 as a humble café, but today it’s a spacious restaurant that is widely regarded as one of London’s best examples of Punjabi food. Prices are low, and with the restaurant being unlicensed and not charging for corkage, a meal here is considerably cheaper than the London average. Unsurprisingly it gets very busy, and lengthy waiting times for tables are not unusual. For all these reasons Tayyabs has been receiving much critical acclaim 40 years after opening, and it’s a new entry on our list at number 94.

The restaurant is now run by the three sons of the original owners: Aleem, Saleem and Wasim Tayyab. Wasim tells us the best place to buy Asian ingredients is Food Hall, at 22-24 Turnpike Lane. His favourite places to eat are the Hawksmoor restaurants, the Turkish Maroush. in Knightsbridge. The kitchen implement he can’t live without is his Robot Coupe R201 food processor.
