What’s Up Languedoc?

L’Entrepôt in Hackney celebrates the wines from Languedoc this November

Borough Wines began life 10 years ago with humble beginnings in Borough Market, since then they have opened a further four sites and an on-trade business supplying top wines to bars and restaurants across London. A need for more office and storage space led the team, directed by Muriel Chatel and Corinna Pyke, to move into an old warehouse in Hackney, this is now the home of L’Entrepôt. The impressive warehouse space - which opened in April 2012 on Dalston Lane in Hackney - houses a wine shop, wine bar and dining room under the one expansive roof.

Throughout November L’Entrepôt will be celebrating the wines of Languedoc in the south of France. A list of 50 wines from 10 specially chosen producers in the region will rotate throughout the month. These will be accompanied by an a la carte of Southern French / Catalan inspired dishes from head chef Patrick Hanna (previously of Rochelle Canteen and Duck Soup) including a Fideuà paella with baked red prawns and a Pot-au-feu stew with boudin noir. All the wines will be available by the glass as well as by the bottle.

The unique selection of producers have been chosen to showcase the variety of intriguing wines from Languedoc, including: Clos Centeilles, who were one of the first producers to realise the potential of Minervois and it's rare indigenous grapes; Virgile Joly and Clos du Serres, the young champions of the Terrasses du Larzac; and French-Australian biodynamic growers Turner Pageot. Here are the vineyards and some examples of their wines that will be served at L’Entrepôt:

The Languedoc really is the ‘new world of the old world’, a relatively new region that is now at the forefront of wine making, and is without doubt the most dynamic and innovative wine growing region in France, un-matched for the diversity and style of its wines and winemakers; from sparkling to sweet, through to the natural wine movement of recent times. It is the largest organic wine-producing region in the world and offers unparalleled freedom for pioneering winemakers to produce wines from a wealth of terroir.

Muriel and Corinna from Borough Wines spent one month researching for wine makers in the area. Languedoc is so rich in new producers that they felt they only just scratched the surface of what the region has to offer, however, they chose their 10 growers and 50 wines to serve at L’Entrepôt throughout November. Approximately 25 wines of the 50 chosen will be on offer at any one time and there is a chance for a diner to win a bottle of wine every day for the month.

This is the just the beginning of L’Entrepôt delving into the wine regions around the world. Four times a year the wine bar and restaurant will celebrate the wines of a different area for one month, undoubtedly a great opportunity to learn more about wine in general, as well as each specific province. The next ‘wine month’ will take place in spring 2014 and the region featured will be in northern Italy.
