It is a day that transcends mere acknowledgement, transforming into a global platform for advocacy, recognition, and action.

Growing up in Ldn who are the women you most admire that are linked to this city and why?

Growing up in the London music scene has afforded me the privilege of being inspired by an array of remarkable women, each leaving an indelible mark on my life in myriad ways. It's impossible to distil my admiration into a single name, as I've always been an ardent supporter of sisterhood—valuing every woman's unique journey, achievements, and struggles. The resilience and strength every woman embodies, regardless of her background or lifestyle, resonate deeply with me.

However, if pressed to highlight one individual among the many who've inspired me, I would shine a spotlight on Sophie Callis, the visionary force behind the Boatpod. Sophie's journey to establish the Boatpod network is a testament to what can be achieved with unwavering hard work and determination. Starting from the ground up, she has created a dynamic, women-led music network that not only showcases talent but also fosters a supportive community for real creatives in the music industry.

Working alongside Sophie, whether directly under her leadership or as a collaborator in her vision, has been an enriching experience. Her dedication to creating a space where musicians and DJs can thrive, share, and grow in the music industry is not just admirable—it's revolutionary. Being part of the Boatpod network, contributing to its growth, and witnessing its impact has filled me with immense pride. This association with London, through the lens of Sophie's achievements and the Boatpod network, embodies the spirit of innovation, community, and empowerment that the city is known for.

Sophie Callis and Boatpod exemplify the essence of female leadership and creativity and is a reminder of the power of vision, the importance of supporting one another, and the incredible impact women can make when they channel their passions into purposeful action.

As a DJ. musician and producer, what were your 1st musical memories of the city and did they shape your future in any way?

My earliest musical memories of London are vividly etched in my mind, each moment acting as a building block for my future. My journey began in the vibrant heart of South London, where I immersed myself in the world of session musicianship. This period of my life was characterized by a relentless pursuit of growth and learning, as I navigated from one studio to another, soaking up every experience and piece of knowledge available.

The energy of London's music scene was infectious, and it wasn't long before I found myself drawn to the underground parties that pulsated through the city's veins. East Village became a sanctuary of sorts, a place where friends and soon-to-be mentors would DJ, creating magic on the decks. Standing on the sidelines, I was fueled by a mixture of awe and aspiration, silently praying for the opportunity to share the stage with these titans of the soulful house genre.

Despite being the youngest among many established artists, I was never made to feel like an outsider. Instead, I was embraced and protected, treated as a little sister by a community that I revered. This sense of belonging and mentorship was instrumental in shaping my DJ style. It wasn't just about learning how to mix tracks or read a crowd; it was about understanding the soulful essence of house music, the art of storytelling through sound, and the importance of creating an atmosphere where everyone felt connected.

This formative phase in my musical career, amidst the hustle and heart of London, laid the foundation for my artistic identity. The lessons learned, the bonds formed, and the experiences gained during those early days have been a guiding light in my journey. The city's rich tapestry of sounds, its diverse communities, and the mentorship of soulful house legends have deeply influenced my approach to music, instilling in me a profound respect for the craft and a burning desire to contribute my voice to the ever-evolving narrative of London's music scene.

London’s a clubbing paradise and when you first started going out, which clubs or events etc did you go to and again did any of them influence your decision to chose music as a career?

Navigating the vibrant landscape of London's music scene has been a cornerstone of my journey, offering me a unique vantage point across various genres. London, a veritable clubbing mecca, has played a pivotal role in shaping my career path, not just in dance music but also in R&B, smooth jazz, and soul music. This eclectic mix of influences started early on, with venues like The Jazz Cafe and Pizza Express Jazz Club serving as my initial gateways into the world of live music. These establishments, known for their intimate yet electrifying performances, would wrap up around midnight, just as the dance music scene began to pulse with energy.

The transition from live shows to clubs was seamless for me, embodying the dual nature of my musical interests. After absorbing the soulful melodies and intricate performances at jazz clubs, I would find myself drawn to iconic dance venues such as the Ministry Of Sound, The End, Matter, and East Village. These clubs fed the DJ aspect of my persona, introducing me to a world where beats and rhythms created an immersive experience, a stark contrast yet a harmonious complement to the live music I cherished.

This duality of musical experiences has profoundly influenced my decision to pursue music as a career. The fluidity with which I could immerse myself in both live shows and dance music events underscored the possibility of a career that did not confine itself to a single genre. Smoothjazz.com recognized this versatility, offering me the unique opportunity to blend jazz and house music in one space. As a producer, I've had the privilege of remixing tracks for some of the world's renowned jazz musicians, further solidifying my place in both spheres of the music industry.

The ability to navigate between live jazz performances and the electrifying atmosphere of dance clubs has defined my approach to music. It's a testament to the eclectic and inclusive nature of London's music scene, which has always encouraged exploration and fusion of genres. This blend of experiences has not only shaped my career but also inspired a creative ethos that values diversity and fluidity, allowing me to carve a unique niche in the music industry.

Can you name your top 5 Women London DJs?

Selecting a top 5 from London's incredibly talented pool of women DJs is a formidable task, given the sheer diversity and skill these artists bring to the table. Yet, each of these women has carved out a unique space in the city's vibrant music scene, leaving an indelible mark on both the industry and on me personally.

Sasha GiGi stands out not just as a phenomenal DJ but as a beacon of energy and passion in London's music scene. Known for her ability to electrify any crowd, Sasha brings an unparalleled vibrancy to her sets. Collaborating with her on an upcoming track has been a highlight of my career, and her dynamic presence is a constant source of inspiration. Sasha is more than just a DJ…she's a force that uplifts and energizes everyone around her.

Marcia Carr is a name synonymous with eclectic and fiery jazz dance sessions. Her sets are unpredictable yet always spot-on, delivering exactly what the crowd needs at precisely the right moment. Marcia's reputation as the "DJ's DJ" is well-earned, and her ability to captivate and energize her audience is unmatched. Attending her gigs is always a priority for me, as she never fails to deliver an unforgettable experience.

Cyndi Handson, a member of the Handson Family, epitomizes the art of fusion, seamlessly blending live elements with electronic production. As a fellow Boatpod DJ, Cyndi's talent for setting the perfect vibe is undeniable. Her sets are a journey through sound, expertly curated to create an atmosphere that's both inclusive and exhilarating.

Jyoty holds a special place in the global music community, yet her roots in London give her sets a unique edge. Her ability to recall and spin those R&B tracks that tug at the heartstrings is extraordinary. Jyoty's sets are a physical workout, guaranteed to have you moving in ways you didn't know were possible, thanks to her skillful genre-blending and impeccable track selection.

Aluna is a jewel in London's musical crown. Her evolution from AlunaGeorge to her electrifying solo performances showcases immense versatility and creativity. My admiration for Aluna goes beyond her music; her record label & Community Noir Fever, is a groundbreaking effort to uplift black lives in dance music. Her commitment to diversity and inclusion within the industry is both necessary and inspiring.

Each of these women brings something unique to the turntables, contributing to the rich tapestry of London's music scene. Their talent, dedication, and ability to inspire are what make them stand out in a crowded field. They're not just DJs; they're architects of experience, creating moments and memories that resonate well beyond the dance floor.

Since the #Metoo movement, women in music and clubbing, has anything got any easier and has there been any real noticeable changes? Do you think it’s still harder for women to break into the music business and what needs to change to make it a more level playing field?

The #MeToo movement has undoubtedly cast a spotlight on the systemic issues women face in the music and clubbing industry, from the glaring absence of safe spaces to the uneven playing fields behind the scenes and on the forefront. This increased awareness is a positive step, highlighting the long-overdue need for genuine support and equality for women. However, the reality of the situation reveals that the support extended to women often comes with strings attached, lacking the depth and equality that their male counterparts receive as a matter of course.

While it's encouraging to see businesses, entities, and corporations emerging with the intent to support female talent, there remains a significant disconnect. Women are often sidelined from the main narrative of the industry, relegated to tokenistic roles or boxed into specific images that serve the commercial interests of companies rather than the artists' authentic expressions. The practice of employing ghost producers for women, under the guise of empowerment, is a glaring example of the superficial measures taken, which do little to foster genuine artistic growth or longevity.

The issue extends beyond just the lack of opportunities; it's about the quality and authenticity of the support provided. There's a critical need for more substantial investment in recognising, nurturing, and promoting women who have dedicated themselves to honing their craft. This includes providing resources for development, offering genuine A&R support, and creating an environment where women are encouraged to grow and excel based on their talents and hard work.

Despite these challenges, it's heartening to see more women active in the industry than ever before. However, for this presence to translate into real progress, there must be a shift towards true equity and respect. This means dismantling the conditions and stereotypes that limit women's roles and contributions, ensuring that talent and creativity are the only metrics of success.

Looking forward, the path to a more inclusive and equitable industry requires both systemic changes and a cultural shift in how women's contributions are valued and supported. It's not just about creating more opportunities but about changing the very fabric of the industry to ensure that women's voices are heard, respected, and celebrated on an equal footing. While strides have been made since the inception of the #MeToo movement, the journey toward true equality is far from over. It's a collective responsibility to continue pushing for change, ensuring the music and clubbing industry becomes a place where women can thrive without barriers.

One of Ldn’s current leading female DJs and what advice would you give your younger self?

Reflecting on my journey as one of London's leading female DJs, addressing my younger self feels like peering through a window to a past filled with both triumphs and trials. If I could send a message back in time, it would be laced with the wisdom of hard-won experiences and the clarity that comes with hindsight.

First and foremost, I'd urge my younger self to embrace unapologetic authenticity. The music industry, with its myriad pressures and expectations, can often dilute one's true essence. I'd tell her to stand firm in her identity and values, understanding that her unique voice and perspective are her greatest assets.

"Say no more often." This simple piece of advice carries immense weight. The power of no cannot be overstated—it's a boundary, a declaration of self-respect, and a tool for steering one's path away from situations that don't align with personal or professional growth. Every no to something that doesn't feel right is a yes to your own well-being and integrity.

To the admonitions and rejections from those who doubted or dismissed me, I'd say, "Run away." Not in defeat, but towards the new opportunities and spaces where my talents and contributions would be valued and celebrated. It's crucial to recognize that not every environment or relationship is conducive to your growth, and it's okay to walk away.

Most importantly, "If it doesn't feel good, leave." Trusting your instincts is paramount. The industry can be a challenging landscape, and it's filled with moments that may test your resolve. Learning to listen to that inner voice that warns you when something isn't right can save you from situations that are detrimental to your personal and professional life.

I spent too much time clouded by fear and the apprehension of being labelled "difficult" for simply asserting my worth and boundaries. This fear, while understandable, often led to compromising situations and relationships that didn't serve my best interests. If I could go back, I'd reassure my younger self that standing up for what you believe in, for your value and your art, is not only right but necessary. Being true to yourself and your vision is paramount, and those who recognize and respect that are the ones worthy of your time and energy.

In essence, the advice I'd give to my younger self is to trust in her strength, her talent, and her intuition. The journey through the music industry is as much about personal growth as it is about professional success. Embracing your authentic self, setting firm boundaries, and prioritizing your wellbeing are the keys to not just surviving, but thriving in this dynamic field.
