We also caught up with Alison Jiear that plays Shawntel in the show, a closet pole dancer to ask her about the show:
AIL: All In London
AJ: Alison Jiear
AIL: Tell us a bit about your character in the show.
AJ: I play Shawntel in Jerry Springer the Opera. Shawntel comes on the JS
Show to tell her husband Chucky that she wants to be a poledancer.
Deep down, she really just wants his love, but he spends so much time at
"tittie-bars", that she figures this would be a good way to get his
attention. It works!
AIL: How does Alison Jiear in real life compare to these characters? Any similarities?!!
AJ: When we were in rehearsals at the Royal National Theatre, I did try to
blag a free night out at Spearmint Rhino to do "research", but apart
from that, no... I've never had a desire to pole-dance.
AIL: What's your favourite scene that you're in during the show?
AJ: They're all good fun, but in some ways, I like the Opening Scene when
the entire company is on stage for the first time. You get a sense of
what the audience is going to be like, and how they're going to respond to the show. Overall, I do like the main scene
that Chucky and Shawntel are in when she does her poledance, and the
ensemble pick on me and call me names.
I do different stuff every night which is great. I've been doing it for a year and a half now, so it's great to be able to keep it fresh, and give the ensemble a laugh at the same time.
AIL: I see that you've done a lot of stage work, from Grease to Les Mis, how does "Jerry" compare with the other shows that you've done?
AJ: JSTO is the most challenging show vocally. You'd never catch an Opera singer singing this score 7-8 times a week. It wouldn't happen.
Every show is different. Les Miserables was enjoyable but I personally enjoy performing a piece with a "lighter" subject matter. Grease was sheer fun. I make sure I enjoy every show I do.
AIL: So what's it like working with the cult-legend that is Davis Soul? Is he a nice guy? Any dirt to dish?
AJ: David's a top bloke. He's consistently brilliant and I respect what he has brought to the role. He's very different from Michael Brandon whom I adore. David's brought something different to Jerry.
I'm in the next dressing room to David, so we're constantly competing
when it comes to the volume on our stereos. I've just received a copy of the 2004 release of his hit "Don't Give Up On Us Baby"
which I sing full blast and out of tune to annoy the sh*t out of him. He thinks I'm crazy. And his point is?????
AIL: Are you a fan of the real-life Jerry Springer show?
AJ: I was a fan of the show. It made me feel like MY life was rather normal
and safe comparatively, and I think as a rule we have a sick fascination
for watching other people's lives.
I don't watch the show any more. I'm flat out finding time to see my
son, let alone watch Jerry Springer.
AIL: You've got some impressive credits on your CV from singing in Star Wars and Bond films to doing backing vocals on Robbie Williams' songs; apart from doing Jerry Spring, The Opera - obviously - what would be the career highlights thus far?
AJ: I work a lot in the studio as a session vocalist both as a soloist and in various choir/groups. Shrek II and Lion King were my favourite projects. I really can't pick one career highlight, but singing the Australian National Anthem at Wembley when we played England in the rugby was pretty bloody fantastic.
AIL: And finally, between performances and when you do get a little bit of time off, what do you enjoy doing in London?
AJ: I'm a homebody. My priority is spending time with my boyfriend and my eight year old son. They are my life, they keep me grounded. I'm a lucky girl.
I do love going to the cinema and there is always music in my house. My son sings along with Ella Fitzgerald like there's no tomorrow.
AIL: Alison Jiear, thank you very much.
