Balham’s proximity to Clapham means it is experiencing the same economic boom; as more and more middle class professionals move in, so do the wine bars, gastro pubs, branches of Waitrose and organic food stores. In terms of housing, Balham has a bit of everything, large four bedroom houses along leafy roads, less attractive-looking purpose built council blocks and noisy flats above main thoroughfares, such as the High Road. It benefits from being situated near Clapham Common, Tooting Bec Common and Wandsworth Common, as well as having good transport links, therefore house prices aren’t likely to remain affordable for long, however it does benefit from being part of the borough of Wandsworth, which boasts the lowest rate of council tax in the country.
