Thamesmead was developed in the late 1960s to house people who previously lived in overcrowded inner city estates. There is 7km of canal that runs through Thamesmead and lots of green open spaces which provide a contrast to the futuristic, arguably somewhat bleak-looking housing estates which have been featured in numerous films (e.g. ‘A Clockwork Orange’).
Currently the area is part-way through a multi-million pound investment programme to improve the area and expand its facilities; The Link Thamesmead for example is a new, £5m community centre which has been built out of nine, once dis-used arches under an elevated roundabout. The Link offers something for everyone including activities, opportunities and spaces for hire. In addition to this, the Sporting Club Thamesmead has also gained significant funding and now boasts a 3G floodlit pitch, a multi-use games area and when it opens next year, the centre will also offer an indoor multi-use room and function rooms for hire.
The area is connected to the rest of London via various bus routes
