Mercer Roof Terrace, on the top floor of Vintry & Mercer, takes in the sweep of London’s skyline, from the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral to the glass tip of The Shard. Here guests can dine al fresco above the city lights. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and convivial, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening wide to the night’s sky.

All In London Review

The summer hangout we never knew we needed

Review Image
I love nothing more than sating my hunger with the spoils of a new restaurant and I have a sneaking suspicion that this one might become a favourite.

The top floor of the new Vintry & Mercer hotel in the City is home to the Mercer Roof Terrace; with its huge floor to ceiling glass doors and abundant greenery, come summer this place will be packed to the rafters as the roof is opened up to flood the space with balmy sunshine, letting diners make the most of the panoramic city views taking in St Paul’s Cathedral and The Shard.

Our Friday evening table was one of only a few in that evening, but given the place had only been open four days it was hardly surprising. The decor is beautiful, as it is throughout the hotel, which it should be considering its taken four years to reach completion. The menu celebrates the best of British cooking, showcasing sustainably sourced meat and fish from the British isles, while an innovative cocktail menu uses house-infused spirits displayed in colourful glass carafes at the bar.

We were in luck with a fresh catch of juicy British langoustines, hauled in from the coast just that morning and accompanied with juicy tomatoes and sea greens. Nothing kicks off a weekend like cracking some shellfish; pretty hefty and perfectly messy, these chaps were delicious. Sticking with the fruits of the sea, I ordered the tranche of turbot, with spinach and seaweed and a portion of the triple cooked chips. Flaky and richly drenched in butter the greens were the perfect accompaniment. My friend chose a pretty impressive looking fillet steak, a hulking chunks of meat that melted at the touch of a knife with a creamy peppercorn sauce. Given the British propensity for a proper pudding we felt it would be a shame not to indulge in a sweet, so we finished off our evening sharing a rather delightful treacle sponge with custard. Sticky and perfectly, almost tooth-achingly sweet, I’m glad I made room.

The aforementioned cocktail list certainly went down a storm, with the curated gin pairings particularly appreciated; we tried an amazing Sipsmith infused with persimmon, cinnamon and blood orange and paired with ginger beer, which I’ll no doubt be returning another time for the green apple, pine and lavender infused Portobello gin served with rosemary and black olive tonic.

From first impressions, it certainly looks like Mercer Roof Terrace might become the summer hangout we never knew we needed.
