Once upon a time, The Britannia was part of the Britannia Brewery built in 1834 by Edward Herrington and William Wells and bought out by Young’s in the early 1900s.
It retains the congenial atmosphere of a traditional pub (sturdy wood bar, real fires, ale) but now has a stylish, sunken dining room and conservatory at the back. The place looks especially inviting at night when candles flicker on every wooden table. The food, as you’d expect, is gastropub, much of it fashionably organic.
A well-thought out menu ranges from small plates like poached eggs Florentine with Hollandaise sauce, to a hearty 28-day dry -aged Short Horn sirloin steak with béarnaise and chips, and an even heartier Chateaubriand for two. Fantastic lunch time specials.

Unlike Lord Snooty, We liked the food and wine. The place was very comfortable, the service excellent and friendly. The prices were reasonable and the portions generous.
I am very particular about my restaurant experience. It's an excellent experience of British Pub/ comfort food.

Ok, I've eaten here many times. The Pub food is very tasty and well prepared but they will serve you a child's portion. They over dress bangers and mash with words like "Chef's finest country Wiltshire pork sausages" and what you get is two very unremarkable sausages and mash for £13.50. The beer is good and the wine not bad for a pub. Steak and chips for 2 with modest glass wine over £50! Fish and chips very good, love the beer batter hate the green toothpaste that is meant to be "Mushy peas"
Gertcha!!!
Nice (ish) (gastro) pub spoiled by high prices and small portions
Try the Abingdon in the next road for a proper gastro pub and better service.
Sorry Britannia ... You could do much better!
