Angel can often seem as if has more Turkish restaurants than Istanbul and as a fan of Turkish cuisine, living on Upper Street, I have sampled a great many of them. There is a reasonable standard amongst all of them with a lot of bargains to be had.
Last night I decided to try out a different Turkish restaurant and wandered into The Ottoman, tempted by the charming but modern interior, and i have to say that I will no longer be visiting any other Turkish restaurants in Angel.
The service was attentive and friendly, without being intrusive and the food was heavenly. Even the appetisers, free of charge, were delicious and just that little bit different form the norm, with some spicy green olives and carrot based dip with bread. The stuffed vine leaves for starter were fresh and mildly spiced, giving a new take on an old favourite. Despite my Greek heritage, I have to admit that the moussaka was the best I have ever had. My companions had equally scrumptious dishes, a lamb tagine with apricots and lamb kofftas.
All in all it was a fantastic meal. My friends and I will definitely be visiting again on a Friday or Saturday night so we can see the belly dancers this time!
