Medley of Greek favourites in Elephant & Castle
As befitting of any taverna worth its salt, a variety of hot and cold meze including homemade houmous, tzatziki and a creamy taramasalata are on offer. Pitta bread is served hot to accompany a plate of tirokafteri, a Feta and chilli dip that is rich and cheesy, the chilli merely providing the colour.
Spanakopita are long thin pastry parcels filled with spinach and a less tangy cheese; while plates of beetroot salad, gigante beans in tomato sauce and a potato salad provide milder flavours. Slices of salty, grilled halloumi are served atop flavoursome gammony ham.
The dolmades are also homemade, containing minty, seasoned minced lamb. Pork and lamb souvlaki have crisp-charcoal flavoured skin which bursts to reveal seasoned lamb and peppery pork meat.
Kalamari rings are deep fried in batter and tender, king prawns are garlicky and fleshy. Everything so far has been flavoursome and cooked with care; when the deep fried scampi arrives it is perhaps the least remarkable dish, purely because it tastes indistinguishable from frozen pub scampi.
After this medley of Greek specialties dessert beckons. These are not made on the premises, however they have stuck to traditional offerings: baklava, galaktoboureko, or thick custard wrapped inside filo pastry, and a syrupy, extremely saccharine Greek sponge cake.
The wine list contains Greek and Cypriot wines; the recommended Agravani 2007 (£17.50), is a slightly fruity red wine from Cyprus made from a blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
Robust flavours and a love of Greek food are the order of the day at My Big Fat Greek. A selection of hot and cold meze including meat and fish dishes is £17.50 per person.

I have been here quite a few times in the last year or so and recently in January.
I have always enjoyed the food found it to be good value and well presented.

This restaurants seems unable to heat up the meals properly.
I have been there twice and on both occasions, there were dishes that were served not properly heated.
Kofdedes cold in the middle and kleftico cold in places.

After eagerly awaitng the opening of 'my big fat greek'resturant.
I was bitterly disapointed with the service (or lack of it) on Saturday 12 February.
My husband and 5 other couples had booked the valentine 'michael buble tribute'
The tables were SO tightly packed if you mleft your seat for any reason you faced a precarious journey to return.
The food -though plentiful-was sporadic. We were finally served our sweet at 11.45pm
4 hours after arriving.
the resturant ran out of tonic water at 10pm and although there is an off license next door, the owner made no attempt to purchase any. This was the case 20 minutes later when the vodka ran out!
the staff were run off their feet and it soon became apparent there wasn't enough to cope.
the overfilling of this resturant raised safety concerns amongst my party and it was soon obvious that financial gain was given priority to customer comfort/safety and service. Such a shame...was looking forward to a good resturant on my doorstep.Unfortunetly,it wasn't going to be 'my big fat greek'
