All In London Review

A solid 7/10 which is more than be said for some of Brick Lane's curry houses

You’re in East London and you want a curry, so you go to Brick Lane… at least that’s what most people think. Actually, given the monopoly that this particular food has in the area, you might be better off heading elsewhere to avoid the painstaking act of walking up and down and attempting to suss out the restaurants on looks alone. However, if you do find yourself wandering Brick Lane in search of quality madras, you could do much worse – trust us, we’ve tried others – than Cinnamon. The simple restaurant is as much about the interior décor as most of the other eateries on this street – meaning that what we find on our Saturday night visit is inoffensive, clean simplicity that needs no more mention than that.

Ushered into the air-conditioned downstairs basement, our large group was free to make as much noise as we wanted. Upstairs the restaurant caters for smaller groups who aren’t perhaps so keen to exploit the BYO rule with multiple bags of beers.

As with any curry house on Brick Lane it’s all about, you guessed it, the curry. Having gone through the motions of the sickly sweet, impossible to decipher dishes in a range of other Brick Lane restaurants we’re pleased to report that there was none of that at Cinnamon. The spread of traditional curries and house specials were well balanced with a rich depth of flavour. And we didn’t even stain our fingernails on sauce, which is always a good sign. Pressed for a recommendation beyond the traditional house specials we’d opt for the kebabish jalfrezi, a spicy dish of minced lamb with onion and tomato in a green sauce. Cinnamon is a solid choice that you can be confident will give you a decent curry. No, it’s not among the best Indian restaurants in London but it’s a solid seven out of ten, which means you can cut the traipsing up and down and head straight in.

No-frills menu with staple dishes

It’s a summery Friday night, and we’ve traipsed all the way down Brick Lane in the wrong direction, not paying attention to where we’re going, and finding the ‘curry touts’ highly amusing. We start off by being polite with “we have a reservation somewhere” mutterings, but this is met with rebuttals. Then my friend discovers that simply saying “no” is most effective.

When we finally get to Cinnamon it's empty, however it’s early and there are at least 30 other restaurants on this street to choose from. It’s clean and unpretentious, with napkins neatly folded on tables with red table cloths.

The no-frills menu offers staple dishes such as jalfrezis, tikkas, baltis and biryanis. While we decide, we nibble on poppadums with mint and mango chutneys, but the zingy tomato one is our favourite.

The garlic king prawns (£4.95) are very appetising; the prawn puree (£3.95) consists of succulent prawns in a mild creamy sauce, wrapped in naan.

The lamb royal (£9.95) has tender pieces of lamb cooked in spices and added to a mild creamy coconutty sauce with pieces of mango. The chicken baddami (£8.95) has slices of chicken tikka in a yoghurty sauce with almonds, pistachios, cashews, peanuts, and a serving of very fresh salad.

Tasty sag aloo (£3.40) and a slightly stodgy cheese naan (£2.50) complete our meal, which we wash down with a surprisingly good bottle of the house Merlot. By the time we finish, the restaurant is packed, and the waiters – who have been helpful and friendly throughout - are flitting around very attentively to ensure everyone is seen to.

Amongst all the touting choosing a venue for dinner on Brick Lane can be a daunting task. Cinnamon is one place that offers simple, good food at reasonable prices.

Went there with a friend just last night. Great food. We got two appetizers, two mains, two drinks and two naan for a very good price. The lamb tikka and chicken curries were very tasty. Good service and they're open late. Very good place.

Average no frills curry house. Basic furniture. Basic decor. Exaggerated menu. Slightly expensive. Can be avoided.
Response from Andy Waiter
I don't agree with this post people go to eat good food not look for decor that's the second thing people look for first food at cinnamon we are known for our food I have been working here for over 6 years I had no one say about decor this is the first if you want good food and service come to cinnamon anything else you are looking for look else where we aim to give good food and good service out prices are little more then some in bricklane reason for that we use fresh products no frozen products that's way our customers pay a little more but we give a discount to our customers before we give bill so this person writing this review has got it all wrong he did not mention anything about food or service

Easily my favourite of brick lane's many curry houses. The food is delicious and the staff, particularly the owner, are friendly and accomodating. The bhuna naga is one of many excellent specialities and you'll typically pay less than a tenner for a starter, main, side and a drink. They also offer a scorching phall if you fancy something a little hotter. Thoroughly reccomended!
