All In London Review

Punjabi classics, large portions and low prices

Northolt is clearly not a restaurant destination. Zooming up the motorway the only eateries that flash by are all-encompassing chicken/pizza/kebab takeaways and the odd off licence. That is until colourful Indian restaurant The Elephant appears.

Inside, its yellow walls and bright decorations suggest a kid-friendly sort of place. Dolls, masks, carvings and of course, elephants hang from walls and are proudly displayed on shelves. Ornate cushions sit on banquettes and materials hang from the ceiling, adding more colour to the proceedings.

The menu focuses on Punjabi cuisine, and the array on offer spoils one for choice. Curries, thalis, tandoori, fish dishes and regional specialties; even the selection of rice and naans is extensive - one can choose pungent garlic, sweet honey and fennel, or a salty cheese naan made with Dutch cheese.

We nibble on crispy onion pakoras with cumin and dry mango that are just a little bit spicy, especially when combined with the accompanying mint chutney. The paneer with lemon, coriander and mint is a little less creamy than usual but its halloumi-like consistency is pleasant nonetheless.

The chicken chettinad is a specialty of the restaurant. Tender pieces of chicken have been cooked in south Indian spices, star anise and coconut – the latter being barely discernible, however the other ingredients are present without overpowering. The Shahi Kofta curry contains large lamb meatballs stuffed with ginger and other spices, swimming in a rich, flavoursome curry, the meat having absorbed the cumin and fennel flavours, making it tasty and fragrant.

Punjabi chaamp masala, a specialty of the Punjabi area, consists of lamb chops cooked in a mild masala sauce featuring the restaurant’s own blend of garam masala. The aromatic lamb falls easily off the bone and tastes of the ginger and spices it has been cooked in.

The dessert menu features classics such as kulfi and badam kheer, or Indian rice pudding, but we opt for the rose honey choorie. A dish with little balls made out of crushed wholemeal roti appears. They’ve been sweetened just a little with honey, rose water and jaggery, or Indian sugar.

Take note if you happen to be in the vicinity, as these staple foods are cooked to a high standard, portions are on the generous side and most of the mains are around £6 - £8, representing excellent value. Takeaway is also possible.

Small but quirky restaurant run by locals. Food is scrumtious though with the fab lamb rajasthan. Off the beaten track but worth going to! This is different to the bengoli curry places in the area and hence we found a few unusual dishes on the menu which were well worth the visit!

Simple yet Effective.
Good Indian grub. Went here last weekend and had a fantastic meal. The staff was friendly and the lady guided us with choosing our selection.
Got some excellent chutneys to kickstart the meal of which most were homemade.
The lamb chops were very tender and the gravy was full of flavour and spices.
Our lamb biryani was equally good but thankfully tasted different than the lamb chops, something we were afraid of (that it would taste similar)
The chillie naan was perhaps too hot for me but nevertheless good.

We had a good time and will be back as it is a short walk away from home!

After reading some good reviews I mistakenly ordered a take away. Big mistake.

The food was really bad. A cold, dry Peshawari Naan, the worst Lamb Biryani i've ever tasted, that just looked and tasted like mush and a Chicken Korma that was somehow spicy.
The bright orange complimentary dip was similarly bad.

It was also delivered in a dirty cool box which didn't inspire confidence. After several bites I just didn't trust the food.

I called to complain and spoke to the manager the next day who refused a refund, which I thought was very unprofessional.

I spent £19 and threw it all in the bin and had to have toast for dinner.
Avoid!

Nice real indian restaurant in an otherwise Bengoli and Gujrati dominated area.

The service is friendly and relaxed and the decor is warm.
We had the buffet which was a great value for money. Liked the lamb curry which was tender and my husband loved the hot wings but they were a bit too hot for me.

A good place, we will be back when we are in the area again.

A.K.

How cool is this place! My mate took me here a few weeks ago and I think it is one of the nicer indian places I have been to. The decor was arty and ecclectic and so was the music. We opted for their Sunday Buffet offer and it turned out to be a good choice. Plenty to choose from, I loved my hot wings and their onion bhajis were one the best Ive ever had. The lamb curry was top notch and I liked the spinach too. Restaurant was busy but the service was good. Relaxed ambience and no rushin out. I visited the buffet 4 times so it was definitely my money's worth!

I totally agree with the all in london review, this is a rare find near Northolt, an area which is not famous for its cuisine. I had the Lamb Chops and they were indeed very nice, with ginger in a rich masala sauce. the lamb was tender and the sauce complimented the meat. my kids loved the decor with elephant statuettes and they got colouring plaques with elephant trivia which kept them busy. We also tried the chicken with fenugreek and the chicken with mango which were equally good. The portions were just right, their service was okay too but the food is definitely the winning aspect here. I might try their sunday buffet next but either way we will be back for sure!

Good indian restaurant in harrow which is dominated by bangladeshi and sri lankan restaurants. Had the sunday lunch buffet (my neighbour recommended it) and the food was fresh, and tasty. Lots of dishes to choose from of which many were punjabi dishes. service was good and efficient and the ambience was buzzing as there was a birthday party going on. Will come back for the a la carte as well

Nice Punjabi Restaurant in Harrow.
Been here a few times already, also for the buffet and take away. The value is splendid with big portions, fresh quality and reasonable prices. The service is good and the interior rich and warm. It is rare to find a real punjabi indian place in harrow as most of the places in the area are bangladeshi so the elephant makes for a nie change. Would definitely recommend it.

I chanced upon this place and went in for a quick spot of my Saturday lunch not knowing anything about the place at all on a recent trip to London. This was quite simply the BEST Indian food I've ever had – I've nothing close to this standard in US. The food was extraordinarily fine with a superb attention to detail. The service was second to none, it was actually my most unforgettable dining experience in London! The Interior was striking as well their other Indian art bits and pieces. I'd love to go for a proper dinner or their Sunday buffet sometime! I know wouldn't feel complete in London without a trip here, can't recommend this place highly enough. Incredible food with a gorgeous decor! I am excited to visit this place again on my next business trip.

Absolutely superb in every way: every dish delicious and perfectly cooked: alu chaat, eggplant and potatoes, fish fry amritsari , panir chettinad with honey nan, etc. The server was excellent and delightful. Definitely our favourite restaurant! Joshi Family London

Our friends took us to elephant Punjabi restaurant in Harrow. We must admit they have the best Punjabi Chaamp Masala we have ever eaten before. Rest of the food was also exquisite, the staff was good at helping us to recommend some of the best Punjabi dishes and their service was very warm and hospitable. There was plenty of food and everything was fantastic. This visit was well worth it.

Best Indian restaurant we have been to in a long long time! Different to your average curry house as the food is authentic and all dishes have their own flavour. we had the sunday buffet which was amazing; you get a whole lot for 8.95 and my family loved the food as well. ambience is very nice and the staff know what they're doing and are very friendly. They are definitely way above your average curry place. favourite new place!
