All In London Review

For tasty dishes at brilliant value, you really can’t beat it

Review Image
London’s almost 24/7 posh diner VQ opened its fifth location in Euston back in November, set on the ground floor of the recently refurbished Euston Square Hotel. From 7am - 2am, seven days a week, it serves a plethora of menu options; whether you’re seeking a pre-work breakfast, boozy brunch or late night nibble, you won’t be short of choice. There’s literally something for everyone.

Visiting on a Wednesday evening, the space soon filled up with peckish diners. If anything, the menu is too broad; prepare to struggle with your decision. A wise word - portions are BIG. It’s all too easy to over-order when there is such an immense choice, yet being the gluttons we are, we obviously put away everything we ordered.

Despite requesting starters and mains, everything arrived at once, resulting in one VERY full table and a very mixed spread of grub. Veggie spring rolls were a deliciously crisp upgraded version of your favourite takeaway, while their halloumi fries are dangerously moreish; my top tip for a late. night nibble with a tzatziki dip. The buttermilk fried chicken, served with a Belgian waffle and lashings of maple syrup, was sublime; perfectly crispy and juicy, as good as any I’ve tried in London. Granted I’ve never made to America’s deep south so can’t vouch for the authenticity of flavour but it was certainly a hefty plateful.

The burgers were well received, a falafel burger with hummus, tzatziki, tomato, spiced slaw and rocket was a really vibrantly flavoured dish, definitely an upgrade on some pretty bland veggie burgers that some restaurants try and peddle, while the lamb burger came with a mouth-watering combo of feta, rocket, pomegranate, aioli, red onion and cumin jam. Coleslaw was fresh and crisp, in fact the only dish that was a bit hit and miss was the mac & cheese, which compared to everything else just seemed a little bland and was more akin to a supermarket microwave meal.

It’s also worth nothing VQ has a VERY decent cocktail list; given the magnitude of the food menu it’s no surprise. My particular recommendation would be the Sherlock, a blend of spiced rum, cassis, blueberries, anise, cranberry juice and homemade lemonade. Dreamy.

Bar the macaroni, VQ’s dinner hit the spot. It might not be Michelin star, but for tasty dishes at brilliant value, you really can’t beat it… particularly if you need some late-night carbs to soak up the evening’s excesses…
