All In London Review

High-brow mexican fast food with depth.

Review Image
First we’ll sort out the name of this highbrow Mexican fast food restaurant on Hanbury Street. If you don’t know Mexico City then chances are you won’t know that those intimately attached to the place know it as Distrito Federal, or simply, DF, hence the name DF Mexico. Got it? Good.

When we say ‘high brow fast food’, we mean it. A self-service restaurant, the idea is that you use either the touch screen stations to order your food or the single staffed till that flags the entrance. Real kooky stuff but it works if you don’t mind leaving your seat – and we don’t.

A mix of Mexico and the USA, the food is gloriously appetising. Think NYC Tortas (a helping of slow cooked beef chipotle slathered with smashed avocado on brioche), chilli-dusted fries, tacos and burritos. We order burrito, tacos and two Brixton brewery beers brewed especially for DF Mexico from the self-service control pad. After ten minutes our food arrives, hot out the kitchen in just over the amount of time it takes to wait for a ‘plain’ burger freshly cooked in a McDonald’s, so proper fast food. The slow cooked pork and habanero burrito with red slaw comes with a depth of flavour that makes you weep at all those salty excuses for Mexican rolls you’ve eaten in the past. The tacos offer the same level of taste in the pulled pork but we would note that the accompanying red pickles were conspicuous by their absence. On the side, we try the ‘Cup of Corn’, which is possibly the biggest revelation of the meal. Who knew warm sweet corn, lime, feta cheese and spices mixed up in a cup could taste this good?!

At £25 for two people – including the beers – DF Mexico is a bargain for the quality it offers. The only problem is the concept of the tip. Perhaps they need to explain how, when and where to do it.
