All In London Review
Sausages and steins - what more do you need?
Located in a basement midway between London Bridge and Borough and identifiable at street level by a simple doorway, Katzenjammers brings a little Bavaria to the neighbourhood. If you know beer halls then you know that they like to keep things simple, so expect to find formulaic rows of beer tables lined up for communal bonhomie. It’s hot, loud and the atmosphere is infectious – even if you’re usually the type happy to quaff a pint, you’ll soon be ordering steins like you need the extra litre of weight on your wrist. It’s not a subtle place but it is a whole lot of fun. If you want to sit then expect to wait for a table unless arriving early. Weekends heave with tourists and Londoners alike, which is a mix that probably helps fuels the fun.
The choice of beers includes dark ales, wheat beers and lagers and of course, you’ll want to indulge in the odd Jaegermeister. And you’ll need something to snack on while you drink. Pretzel, sausages, schnitzels and sauerkraut are just part of the authentic German menu that is just about the perfect food to accompany beer.
If you haven’t sampled Katzenjammers then it is probably time you did. And they even have a regular Oompah band knocking out classics at weekends.
