All In London Review

Vegan food that is simple, wholesome and generous

A literal stone’s throw away from Tulse Hill station is where you’ll find Greenz, a vegan restaurant. We’re half expecting a station caff but instead we walk into a smart dining room with vivid red walls and neatly laid out tables. It’s also very compact, as it feels like we’ve barged into someone’s living room until it starts to fill up.

The owner, a former teacher, opened Greenz in April this year, with the premise of offering quality vegan food as well as healthy lifestyle workshops and cookery classes.

The menu has the sort of food you go to your mum’s for, with dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world. The lasagne is a mammoth portion served piping hot, made with kidney beans, peppers, onions and a supremely rich lentil-based béchamel instead of the usual cashew nut cream. The mixed bean burger has been roasted till deliciously crispy on the outside, served in a wholemeal bap with homemade onion relish, coleslaw and potato wedges coated in a spicy rub. Other dishes include cashew and mushroom wellington, pumpkin and black eye bean pie, and roti and channa; some are available to take away too.

For dessert there are sugarless options like lemon and poppyseed cake, but we opt for the banana and ginger delight, a sticky, moist cake with crunchy walnuts that we like very much. There is no alcohol so we go for the next best thing, very sweet virgin mojitos with heaps of fresh mint and lime.

Greenz may not be about to set the gastronomic world alight, but there’s something very honest about this little place in South London, from the exposed kitchen that allows us to see - and at times hear - the food being cooked, to the simple, wholesome, and very generous servings that arrive on our table. A three course meal for two with drinks comes to around £50.

Who knew vegan grub could taste so good?

Wholesome and healthy versions of old favourites like lasagne with a rich lentil-based béchamelare on offer at this tiny, cosy restaurantwith extremely friendly staff. There is no booze, but they do have virgin mojitos and mango lassis.

On the way back from a meeting, hungry, as we peered through the glass intrigued by the name, the owner opened the door and greeted us with a warm and friendly smile, well what a hidden gem we found. The homemade wholewheat pumpkin pattie was out of this world. Pastry was nothing like I have tasted before. Highly recommend you try and see for yourself what I am talking about!!!
