Lunch among headstones

A break from the norm

Where: St. Martin’s Gardens, Camden St, NW1 0DX

We at All In London believe this park and former cemetery in Camden has the edge over most other green spaces...

First of all you’re allowed to take portable barbecues, which most parks won’t permit, and secondly there are large dips in the ground. Want to guess what they are? Yep, they’re former burial sites.

The graveyard faced a huge outcry in the 19th century when the council decided to build almshouses here, which still remain on the perimeter. Hundreds of bodies were dug out, resulting in an appalling smell the residents had to contend with. Furthermore, those doing the digging were attacked by stone-throwing crowds.
