Set foot in an operating theatre

It’ll make you appreciate the NHS...
This must try is connected to: Old Operating Theatre Museum

See how they scaled out operations in the good old says (1821), by paying a visit to the country’s oldest surviving purpose-built operating theatre, located on the roof of St. Thomas’s Church.

Still intact are the original furniture (that surgeon’s chair is scary) and implements used – and you can wander through rooms of 19th century operating tables and surgical equipment – just as the ‘poor’ women of the 1820s would have done when this theatre was originally built.

As relief hits you that you live in the 21st century and not 1820, it’ll make you appreciate the NHS.
