Step inside a secret castle in the woods

Catch the great views...

Where: Severndroog Castle

Few people are aware of Severndroog Castle, possibly because it lay in disrepair for a number of years. Its quirky name comes from Suvarnadurg, the island on the coast of India that was attacked by Commodore Sir William James in the 18th century. In those days these things were celebrated, so this castle was built as a memorial to him in 1784. Located in the woodlands and atop Shooter's Hill, from the top of the castle there are brilliant views - it's even claimed you can see seven different counties from here on a bright day (go on, try and count them).

But what you can definitely see are the cable cars travelling over the Thames and planes flying to and from London City Airport. From the outside Severndroog looks like a picture-perfect fairytale castle, inside you'll find golden chandeliers and elaborate carvings fit for royalty. Small wonder this Grade II listed building is so popular for weddings.
