Visit the hospital chapel turned arts venue

An unexpected arts venue

Where: Fitzrovia Chapel

This beautiful venue was once part of Middlesex Hospital, and in fact first opened as the Middlesex Infirmary in the 1740s. In the 80s, Princess Diana opened the country's first wards for patients with AIDS and HIV-related illnesses here. It eventually closed in 2005, and the chapel was restored to become the arts venue it is today.

Among its most stunning features are an intricate mosaic ceiling and glass-stained windows, and exhibits have featured contemporary artists such as outfits worn by performance artist Leigh Bowery, who died at this hospital in 1994.
