Watch a movie at the place where film began

Cinema is alive and well.

Where: Regent Street Cinema

This intimate theatre on Regent's Street can be considered the birthplace of UK cinema, as it was here where the Lumière brothers showed their Cinématographe machine to British press and to a paying audience for the first time in 1896.

The cinema made history again in 1951 when it showed the UK's very first X-rated film. After closing down in 1980, it reopened in 2015, and now screens a mixture of independent and mainstream cinema, both digital and on 35mm. It's also a welcome addition to the West End - located towards the northernmost part of Regent Street it's a little removed from the hustle and bustle, meaning you can still find a relatively quiet auditorium on a Friday night.

The building has been restored to its classic glory - check out the mirrored tiles on the ceiling of the auditorium which reflect the action on the screen.
