Back in the 1830s, the people of the city of London helped to lay the foundations for a 175-year history of education and support for local blind children, when they backed the creation of RLSB (the Royal London Society for Blind People).

RLSB’s journey began in 1838, when merchant and teacher Thomas Lucas showcased his Lucas Type – a form of embossed text designed to teach blind children to read - in a school on Baldwin Gardens just around the corner from Leather Lane in the heart of London. We’re still standing 175 years later thanks to the early support of the local community.

To celebrate this incredible legacy and the Londoners that helped us along the way, we're giving locals a lunch break with a twist. Come down to Leather Lane market on 5 April between 11:30am - 2:30pm to munch on candy floss, get the chance to win some prizes and find out more about the local history.
